Description

Warm the cockles of your heart with this classic European, warm winter drink. A festive party favorite that can stay warm on the stove – if it starts running low, just keep topping it up!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle red wine (blend or table wine is good or whatever you have on hand)
  • 2 large cinnamon sticks
  • 1 heaped tbsp whole cloves
  • 4 to 5 orange slices
  • 1 tbsp allspice
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 cups fresh orange juice (or water if flavor is too bold)
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar, or to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan warm the wine cinnamon, cloves and orange slices on a low heat, stirring occasionally – do not let it boil.

  2. Once it has reached a warm-hot temperature and steam is beginning to rise, add in the rest of the ingredients (all spice, nutmeg, orange juice (or water) and sugar.)
Stir until sugar has fully dissolved.
  3. Taste, add more sugar if necessary.

  4. Ladle into cups and serve warm.
