These days, it’s easy to fixate on everything we should be doing when trying to grow our social media, and we can often forget about what we should not be doing. The world of social media is fickle, constantly changing with inevitable ebbs and flows.

At DoubleShot Creative, we understand how exhausting it can be to keep up with the ever-changing trends of social media and digital marketing. Take a step back with us to review the basics, where we will share five common (but easily remediable) mistakes that we see brands fall victim to when growing their online presence.

Mistake #1: Not appealing to your target audience

With all the different platforms on social media, one is spoilt for choice. However, with social media, it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. Each platform provides a diverse audience that is each searching for different content. By adjusting the copy and content you share, you can appeal to the audience of your dreams. According to InGenium, some examples include headline-focused and news-oriented content for Twitter, company news and professional content for LinkedIn, and photos, quotes, personal content, and stories for Instagram.

The possibilities are endless once you establish the type of content your audience wants to consume. If you’re having trouble defining your audience, look at our six steps to an unbeatable social media strategy.

Mistake #2: Not sharing visual content

One of the most impactful trends we have seen this year on social media is the increase in visual content. It’s no secret that eye-catching visuals will draw an audience in. According to VWO, 54% of consumers wish to see more video content than reading text or skimming through images. If you are not utilizing visual content in your social media strategy, we highly encourage you to do so – you can thank us later.

Mistake #3: Not engaging with your audience

Once you have your audience’s attention, staying connected with them is crucial. If you have people commenting on your posts (minus bots, of course), be deliberate in responding to those comments. If the post doesn’t prompt a response, you can always interact with the comment differently, for example, retweeting the response or “liking” it. By establishing your brand as an active presence on social media, you will gain a loyal following and increase your engagement rate in the process.

Mistake #4: Not tracking analytics

While not glamorous, analytics can provide beneficial insight into your content’s performance. We recommend tracking your numbers to see what content does well and to understand how your numbers look month-to-month. If you are not tracking your analytics, it’s never too late to start!

Mistake #5: Not using a scheduling tool

Similar to analytics, finding the right scheduling tool for your brand can take the brunt work out of your social media strategy, allowing you to put your efforts into creating high-quality content. You can use many affordable scheduling tools that are user-friendly and convenient.
